Hisoka is NOT very strong

Is Hisoka really that powerful? Just how powerful this mad clown really is? Numerous fans of the popular manga/anime Hunter X Hunter has asked these two questions. In this post, we shall tackle if Hisoka really is powerful or is just one of those over hyped characters simply because he is one of the so-called fan favorite.

Summarized below are some facts of events that showcases HIsoka's strength. At one angle, it can be considered as a display of ruthlessness (funny how these two can be confused with one another)

During the Hunterx Exam
Hisoka first appeared as a contestant in the Hunter exam that also includes our 4 main protagonists (Gon, Killua, Kurapica, and Leorio). In this arc, Hisoka displayed his joy of fighting worthy opponents which ended up badly for the latter.

Unfortunately, in this arc, not a single character is shown to be at the same level as Hisoka. Except maybe for Illumi. As can be remembered, Illumi is ready to kill Gon but Hisoka interfered -- warning Illumi that it would really displease him if something bad would happen to Gon. Out of fear or respect, but Illumi left Gon alone.

Floor leader at the Heaven's Arena
The next time we saw Hisoka is at the Heaven's Arena. Here it was disclosed that the mad HxH clown is a floor master -- and any fan would know that only the strongest is capable of becoming and holding their status as floor master.

During this arc, there are two instances that HIsoka showed his power. First is during his battle with Kastro, and the other during his battle with Gon. However, any veteran HxH fan would know that Kastro will not survive long if he battle with the truly gifted Nen users in the HxH universe. And Hisoka's battle with Gon, well, it was a meh' (at that time, Gon is a noob in his Nen capabilities)

Member of the Phantom Troupe
Now this is the moment where Hisoka's skills and Nen prowess are displayed. The Genei Ryodan is composed of powerful Nen users -- and that means, if you're a weakling, you would not become a member.
With this arc, there are many instances where Hisoka is about to fight with strong opponents, particularly the Spider's leader (Kororo Lucifer) and Nobunaga (another member). Sadly, neither of the two materialized and we are again left speculating about the extent of Hisoka's abilities.

Battle with Razor
The first real battle Hisoka has against a strong opponent is perhaps with Razor. Razor is one of the creators of Greed Island and other members of the Phantom Troupe (also known as Spiders or Genei Ryodan) acknowledge his strength. In fact, the only Hunter that was able to capture Razor is none other than Ging Freecs (arguably, one of the most powerful characters in the Hunter X Hunter universe)
During this battle, Hisoka did not hold back with his skills but Razor was still able to heavily injured him (probably due to Hisoka's miscalculation). But, one must note, that the battle is not a fight-to-the-death duel but a sport of sort. Who knows if it would be an all-out battle -- will Hisoka descend to his murderous instincts and be able to strategize properly; or Razor will revert back to his old self, at a time where he was a muderous criminal that can only be captured by top Hunters.

Battle with Kororo

Now this is the moment HxH fans are waiting for -- Kororo's battle with Hisoka. It turns out that Kororo is also a floor master so the two will eventually meet since two floor masters must battle with one another.
As exciting as the match is, it is also quite disappointing. As it appears, Hisoka has been pursuing Kororo. It is somewhat similar to a cat and mouse approach. This must have been on-going for quite a while since Kororo was able to come up with a good strategy wherein Hisoka's percentage of winning is very slim.
In fact, Kororo's battle with Hisoka is a bit one sided from the start. Its either that Kororo's strategy (he actually borrowed powers of two Phantom Troupe members) is very effective or that Hisoka is not skillful enough to adapt with a quick solution against overwhelming odds.

Nevertheless, Hisoka survived and the two members who lent their power to Kororo ended up miserably.

So Is Hisoka OverHyped?
Now that we have the facts, let's draw out some conclusions. Some conclusions that cannot be argued is that
  • Hisoka is bloodthirsty murdering psychopath
  • He is skillful and can be a good tactician in battles
  • Is powerful -- but not powerful enough in the level of the Zoldyck Partriarchs, Netero, Ging, etc...
