One of the strangest loopholes in the hunter x hunter universe is Killua's Nen.
Killua, the supposed protégé and heir apparent of the Zoldyck family was considered as a professional assassin at a young age as he was trained by Silva and Illumi thus acquiring high level skills. However, one thing that seems quite confusing is his Nen.
During the Hunter Exam and Celestial Tower arc, it is clearly seen that he is not aware of the concept of Nen and was only introduced to it by Hisoka and explained by Wing Sensei. Does this mean that Killua's targets during his professional assassin days are only regular people that does not use Nen. This is because in a Nen battle, the one who does not know about it will surely be defeated.
Another thing is Kalluto. Despite being younger than Killua, Kalluto was portrayed as someone who already knows and is adept at Nen. Below are some situations where Kalluto displayed some degree of knowing Nen.
- When he is with Illumi when they infiltrated the Spiders during the Yorkshin arc.
- During the Greed Island arc
- During the Chimera Ant arc
In the first bullet, Kalluto left the Spiders hideout when ordered by Illumi (in fact, the Spider member that looks like a cross breed between Frankenstein and the Hulk saw Kalluto escape and is actually smiling). Someone who does not know Zetsu wouldn't be able to hide their presence in a group of powerful Nen users.
When Kalluto replaced Hisoka, the Spiders acknowledged his strength and brought him along during the Greed Island and Chimera Ant arc.
Now this will bring us back to Killua vs Kalluto in terms of learning Nen. How come the nominated leader of the Zoldyck family doesn't seem to know Nen or is the last one who learned it among the combat-capable siblings (excluding Milluki Alluka)?
My best guess would have to be because he left the Celestial Tower. Recall that he was able to advance on the higher floors but got bored and left. It is best to assume that if stays there, he would eventually know Nen by fighting other opponents / participants since Killuas is skilled at analyzing the enemy. He would probably see Nen, experience it, and make his own research / investigation to learn it.
