Globe No Capping Unli Internet

TRUE! Globe Telecoms appears to have unli internet with no speed capping/throttling (not subject to FUP) when using its PPU setting. Sadly, it seems that not all Globe subscribers knows it. This might explain why some users (probably those who don’t know) are complaining that Globe’s data offers are expensive and that there is no such thing as unlimited internet.

This post aims to discuss this so-called PPU internet setting as well as other tips to fully utilize Globe’s data offers.

For the benefit of those who are not aware, Globe's data offers can be categorized into three:
  • bulk MBs
  • Supersurf
  • PPU

These are Globe data promos that have specific data allocation. For instance, Gosurf50 is 2GB open access plus 1GB per day for specific apps (YouTube, FB, Instagram, videos, chat, etc...)

Bulk MBs also have pure open access internet promos. Basically, these are the recently launched GO data offers. For example GO50 is 5GB open access for 3 days. Unlike GoSurf50, GO50's entire allocation is for open access. This means that the whole 5GB can be used for just about anything (browsing, streaming, apps, downloads, etc...)

To emphasize, GO internet promos are different from GoSURF data offers. GO is for pure open access while GoSURF's allocation is bundled with app-specific usage.

Not really a big fan of Globe's Supersurf since this one seems to be subject to data capping or FUP. Based on observation, internet speed will be throttled after 800MB of usage. Don't worry though as it will revert back to normal speed every midnight.

PPU is actually the acronym of Pay Per Use. As the name implies, Globe allows a user to only pay on what has been used and no data promo involved. Some users are not familiar with it while some of those who do, refers to it as an unlimited data trick.

It is not actually unlimited internet trick but more of a setting. All Globe subscribers can use the PPU feature and its two variations:
  • 5 pesos no throttling internet all you can for 15 minutes
  • 2 pesos per MB
For obvious reasons, the first variant is the better choice. Basically, thanks to Globe's PPU internet feature, the telecom company charges the user only 5 pesos for 15 minutes of internet usage regardless of how much data volume was consumed hence the name Pay Per Use.

PPU has no Speed Capping
Additionally, it seems that PPU is not subject to FUP. Based on actual usage, with only 20 pesos, 17GB was consumed in less than an hour. Naturally, it can be assumed that the speed was not throttled or downgraded with that amount of data volume used. For those who are wondering, the activity is updating the OS of three Huawei P10 phones together with updating Windows 10 of two laptops.

This might explain why some users familiar with this feature refers to it as unli internet trick. Basically, as long as there is sufficient load, a user can used as much internet every 15 minutes without worrying about internet speed slowing down.

How to activate and use PPU
Carefully follow the instructions below to avoid unwanted charges:
  1. Turn off data and text SurfAlert Off to 8080
  2. Load the mobile phone depending on how long you will be connected to the internet
  3. Once you received the text confirmation that load has arrived, you may now turn on the device internet connection
Very Important Notes and Things to Remember:
  • Once Surfalert is deactivated through 8080, 5 pesos will be immediately deducted from the number's wallet balance when activating the internet
  • Be sure to remain connected for 15 minutes to maximize the connection
  • A “LoadWatch message will be received when 15 minutes is reached. If the mobile number's load wallet still has load, 5 pesos will automatically be deducted to ensure continuous usage for the next 15 minutes
GO promos VS GoSURF VS PPU
Unfortunately, this is a wrong angle to look at it. There is no single best data offer as each will depend on the user's needs. Let's look at the following scenarios:

If the user is a student or a kid, then GoSURF promos with learning bundles is the wise choice since it ensures 1GB daily internet for learning apps and sites. Aside from the 1GB learning bundle allocation, there is also a dedicated open access data for miscellaneous or other internet usage.

For an online worker or someone who is on a WFH (work from home) setup, then Go promos is a good fit especially for those who is heavy on virtual meetings.

PPU on the other hand is best for anyone who knows that they would be using a huge amount of data like downloading videos for binge watching later.

And now, for the best part, it seems that these promos can be used simultaneously for each other. Below is a good scenario to consider.

One Great Case Scenario
A family of five (Dad, Mom, Eldest Teenager, a 7 year old second, and a toddler for the youngest) can conveniently enjoy digital life with GoSURF and GO data offers plus PPU. If dad and mom is WFH due to the pandemic; the eldest wants binge watching; the middle kid is a gamer; and the toddler enjoys watching unboxing toy videos; then the first promo to register is a GoSURF with a one week duration. This will ensure the kiddos will have 1GB of allocation for their video and entertainment needs.

If the open access that comes with the GoSURF promo is not enough, then simply register to a GO internet promo (not another GoSURF since the 1GB daily will be redundant). Basically, with this method, the 1GB freebie daily is continously running together with the open access allocation of both GoSURF and GO promos. And if there would be instances that someone needs to use a huge amount of data (say a patch on a game that will need 1.5GB), then simply use PPU.

Tips in using PPU
Since PPU is time bounded, it is important to strategize when and how to use this particular internet setting. Below are some tips in doing so:
  • To avoid wasting precious minutes of the 15-minute period, save or know beforehand the things to download for offline viewing. This may include Netflix episodes, links of video streaming sites that allows download, etc...
  • Only put in enough load (say 40 pesos for a two hour period)
  • Another tip is that PPU might be a good choice for kids who have the same time for online classes since virtual classrooms may consume heavy data. For example, if two kids have online classes from 9am to noon
  • For 8-hour or long duration virtual trainings, online workshop, etc...

Choosing the right option
As mentioned, mixing PPU with other promos is the way to go. However, it is also important to weigh in the proper selection.

Let's take that 8-hour online training for example. With PPU, this would require 160 pesos. But for that amount, one can already subscribe to three GO50 (5GB for 3 days) which is equivalent to 15GB of open access data for the next three days.

So which is the better option, PPU or GO50? The trick here is to determine the number of internet users. If only one person would be attending the online training, then GO50 is the wiser choice since it might only need 2GB for the entire day of virtual training. However, if two or more members of the household would be using huge data for the same time period, then PPU may be better.

Why still offer GoSurf if GO promos is already for pure open access?
Best guess is for control. Let's take a look at Gosurf50 and GO50. GO50's is 5GB for 3 days. However, the 5GB allocation can be consumed in one day thus leaving no internet usage for the next two days. On the other hand, Gosurf50 is 2GB of open access for 3 days and 1GB daily also for three days. The trick here is that even though the 2GB open access is consumed in the first day, the user is still assured of 1GB until the third day.

What is SurfAlert?
In this last section, we will tackle SurfAlert. Globe’s SurfAlert feature is there to protect the subscriber from inadvertent load deduction. If SurfAlert is turned ON (texting SurfAlert ON to 8080), the user cannot browse the internet without a data promo even though they have enough balance. As mentioned, this feature is in place to protect from accidental charging if the user activated their data. So before using PPU, it is important to turn OFF SurfAlert, otherwise PPU won't work. Additionally, after using PPU, turn back Surfalert to ON just to protect the load balance from accidental deductions.
