Philippine Commemorative Coins

Philippine Commemorative Coins are released by BSP (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas translation Central Bank of the Philippines) to commemorate significant person or events in the Philippines history.

The PISO commemorative coins featured here are part of my collection. I didn’t hunt or searched them out per se. It just arrived or was noticed by chance since these are coins in circulation. However, even though circulating in the market, they are not mass produced similar to mainstream coins which is why encountering them is pure sheer luck.

5-peso Leyte Gulf Landing

This Philippine commemorative coin was released last 2014 and is still in circulation (although it seems that not much have been produced (since it serves as a commemorative piece)

This 5 peso coin commemorates the 70th year of the Leyte Gulf Landing. Inscribed on the backside are the signature and words of Field Marshal Douglas Mc Arthur

Douglas MacArthur: “I have returned. By the grace of Almighty God our forces stand again on Philippine soil - soil consecrated in the blood of our two peoples.”

It is worth noting that Douglas Mc Arthur is a general in the US Arm y but holds the rank of Field Marshal in the Philippines Army as appointed by then President Manuel L. Quezon. This is the reason why this designation is the one that is written in the 5 peso commemorative coin.

Also, to this date, General Mc Arthur is the only person to have hold this position in the Philippine Army.

As for the Front side of this Leyte Gulf Landing commemorative coin, it can be inferred that the one on the leftmost is President Quirino (due to his signature hat)

while the prominent figure in the middle is Gen. Mc Arthur

10-peso Heneral Antonio Luna

Next is this 10 Piso Heneral Antonio Luna commemorative coin celebrating his 150 years.

On the face side of the coin, one can see his signature, 10 Piso, HENERAL ANTONIO LUNA, and REPUBLIKA NG PILIPINAS (yes the last two are all in uppercase letters)

On the other hand, the following markings can be seen on the reverse side of this commemorative coin (together with their English translation):

  • DANGAL TAPANG DIGNIDAD (Honor, Bravery, Dignity)
150 TAON HENERAL ANTONIO LUNA (150 Years General Antonio Luna)
BAYANI NG DIGMAAN LABAN SA ESTADOS UNIDOS 1899 (War Hero against the United States 1899)
  • 150 TAON (150 years seen in the left side as adorned within the epaulette of the Luna’s Brigadier General rank)

Shown also is General Luna in horseback together plus the La Independencia just above the inkwell. For the information of readers who are not are not aware, La Independencia is the periodical founded by General Luna in 1898 of the Philippine Revolution against Spain.
